India mock grade.

Mock Exam Feedback - Al

Mock Exam

I believe that in evolution of the digital age has significantly affected how the music is marketed and how the audience consumes it as the audience is now highly involved with the mix of production, distribution and consumption, where as before it was all completed by the majors.

One of the three remaining majors left in the industry, Sony have to now keep up the new digital age or they will go bust like EMI did even in the last decade as they refused to change their ways. As Sony is a parent company it also has a lot of subsidiary involved in the industry such as Syco owned partly by Simon Cowell. Syco is a record label that has on the label artists such as One Direction who were found on the Syco show The XFactor. Throughout the show the audience participates by phoning in, creating and building a new artist for its mainstream large audience using visualization and a interactive side as the contestant preform every week using Sonys Back catalog of songs and straight after the performance the songs are available to download on to phones, ipods and computers via itunes furthermore the show has its own youtube channel for free where it puts the clip of the performance for a world wide audience to view and enjoy for free, this means free global advertising  for the artist.

Niche audiences of mainly passionate musicians prefer the work of artists signed to smaller (24% of the industry) so called Indie labels. Indies are now thriving in the new digital age as this is how they have always marketed and let their audiences consume and due to pricy the majors have had to change to the indie ways. In only having a niche audince Indie artist can highly effectively connect with their audiences online via social networking sites such as youtube and mysace. Indies furthermore allow their audiences to take the songs made to allow them free advertising as they have such an niche audience and do all of their marketing online as it is free and could reach a global audience via the internet.

In the last decade even the audience of music has changed dramatically as before it was just producer (majors) and consumers (audience) however due to new technology the audience have now become prosumers  and are now a big part of the music industry. Using the internet anyone now can go online and easily download music for free using software such as you tube converter and then make a soundscape or mash up of songs and then release it on social sites such as MySpace and Youtube to market themselfs for free to a potentially global audience. it is so easy now due to the ease that new technologies have created people ca even now make a mash uo on there phone and put it online, they do not have to go through a major to market themselves and make money from old remixed music.

Lastly leading on from the prosumers an artist called Beck started and made a DIY album, by only releasing the notes to the songs via his website online, he had label he was signed too, he involved his audience by letting them interpreter his music and share it with the other audience member also giving him free advertising and marketing all online and all by his audience. This meant he did not have to spend a penny but made profit releasing books with his notes in  generating profit. With out new technologies Becks work would not be possible without signing to a record label, but with new media any one can easily.

To conclude the new decade of evolving new technologies has substantially affected how the the labels market their artist and how the audience consumes it and the new media has meant PDE has blended.

Al: Mock Exam

The post modern music industry and the use of digital distribution is working towards to create a cheaper, easier and more interactive form of industry.

As social networking has taken off it has never been easier to give direct feedback to an artist, with a single tweet you can voice your opinion within a growing participatory audience. Beck a DIY artist who wrote a whole album in sheet music used solely digital distribution to market his work. He was able to connect with his niche audience, not only does this allow for a better relationship between artist and fan, it also aloud him to directly advertise to them. Consumers were able to feed beck and submit there pieces directly to Beck, not only is is growing a solid foundation for a life long fan it also helps to indeer the fan into buying the music. With a good consumer relationship and direct marketing piracy isn't a threatening issue.

Not every artist or corporation has been as lucky to avoid to heat from the world of piracy, indie labels are suffering from the growing risk of copied music. Labels are being forced to adapt their distribution methods to a more interactive and fan orientated method. I think this is a well deserved wake up call, now labels have to hear the consumers voice. NinjaTune an electro/house British label works purely on digital distribution to market their music. As they produce very original and niche music they have realised that they must interact with fans and connect directly with them. Piracy is not a justifiable crime but i'm glad it made labels realise about the importance of including fans in distribution. Labels that fail to adapt to the post-modern music industry are finding themselves in a slow decline and are sure to end up like the once giants EMI.

Consumers are embracing the news means of interaction with artists and labels. They are taking the music into their own hands and soundscaping old tracks to create fresh new sounds, everyone has the building blocks to become a potential star in todays world. Madeon, a french prosumer simply combined 35 of his favourite tracks together and gain overnight fame. The video went viral and is now sitting on just under 19 million views. He only used digital distribution like YouTube, Twitter, SoundCloud and MySpace which have an audience of millions. All these means of digital distribution allow for a direct connection for fans, instant feedback, global audience and on top of that it is all free. Producing, distributing and exchanging music has never been easier with free, simple and effective means to distribute to consumers it has revolutionised the music industry.

As consumers are raking the benefits of digital distribution and labels are changing for the better it seems as the music industry is surely heading in a simpler more organic direction. This is not always the case as one direction are heading in a completely the opposite way. Syco, producer of X-Factor and major label giants are now using digital distribution to globalise their bland and stale branded boy bands to a global audience. With the purity of music slowly fading and the use of synergy we are beginning to see every synthetic song produced eveywhere. Although we cannot deny the fact that the use of social networking and the internet have pushed music into a easier more interactive direction it still does not mean that we wont end up with un-orginal music. Syco have adopted these methods to try and monopolise the industry and to aim to a general globalised audience with little meaning apart from simple profit.

With all good comes some bad and the fact digital distribution has pushed industries and artists in the right direction with a more interactive front is a success. Accepting that fact big corporations will always try and profit from new technologies and methods is just a small downside to the ever progressing music industry. The music industry is now shaping to be a more organic voiced industry and new music is sure to be impressive.

Question 6: India

Evaluation Question Six. India.

Syco is Simon Cowells company under the name of Simco Ltd in 2002 under Sony entertainment. It specialises in film, music, tv and entertainment. To get across to their varied audiences they have offices and bases all over the world for their global market and audience. Shows such as Britain's Got Talent (which later went on to American, Turkey, France and Spain and many more, it's now a global show phenomenon ) and The XFactor (mainly mirrored on America where Simon cowell also hosts it) and acts such as One Direction and Leona Lewis are signed and produced and marketed by Syco. Through his global marketing and media campaigns he ha been able to selling over 200 million albums and reach over 180 number one hits for his artists. Due to Simons celebrity status he has also used this to sell and make him and his artist alot of money. He has been named one of the Most Influential people in the worlds one of the most powerful person in reality tv. This is also a good use of advertising as he I promoting himself and therefor promoting his brand and artists alike to the world, he also uses his connections to promote artists such as 1D who appeared on The XFactor US ,where Simon is also a judge, to promote them to the US market. Syco has a film for 1D to ensure more millions will be made for the band, ensuring they will stick around for a long time to continue to make more and more millions for the company to keep them going and safe from administration like so many other company's around the world have. The newest show Simon has produced is called the You Generation to compleat and keep up with the music times of music ad networking communication being digital and mainly on YouTube, he has come up with a show to combine with the new and the changing trends, this is why Simon remains at the top of his game as he moves with the times instead of trying to stay the same and hope people will go back to their old ways.

Syco to promote world wide uses synergy across all of the medias, to ensure to reach all of his audience in every possible way. For example for One Direction, his marketing and media team made a website, arrange interviews(radio and tv) create a twitter and Facebook page, YouTube channel and an interactive game over the Internet to draw in more fans, the games incorporates all of the media to find clues in for example a magazine or a TV show, to win a prize (mostly tickets to their show) this is a clever way to advertise as it's fun for the audience and ensures that the fans and people who are not even fans are bombarded with promotion so the artists remains talked about and become celebrity's for people to follow, love and support AKA buy tickets and merchandise to keep the band going as they no longer can make a profit from just record sales as so many people now just download of the Internet, so company's like Syco have to come up with new was to promote and get many from other means or they would go bust and that would be another music company gone forever like EMI before us.
